First RFID tag approved by US Department of Agriculture

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently approved a passive ultrahigh- frequency RFID tag to track cattle along with its current animal ID system, said the article.
There are approximately 105 million cattle in the United States and about 5 percent of all American cattle are tracked with low frequency RFID tags. In early 2008, the USDA aims to enrol 70 percent of all the cattle into the existing animal system. The UHF tag has a read range up to 15 feet with a handheld reader and more than 25 feet with a fixed interrogator, compared to the read range of 4 to 12 inches for LF tags. This proves to be more efficient, especially for a large herd population, said many cattle owners.
